Definition
Yoni is the Sanskrit word for the female genitalia — encompassing vulva, vagina, cervix, and in broader usage the womb. Like lingam, the word also appears in Hindu iconography as the base or receptacle in the Shiva-linga symbol, representing the feminine creative ground into which the masculine principle descends.
In contemporary tantric and sexual-health contexts "yoni" functions as a respectful, body-positive alternative to purely clinical or slang language. It carries connotations of origin, source, and sacred space without being euphemistic — the Sanskrit meaning is straightforwardly anatomical.
Where the word comes from
From Sanskrit yoni (योनि), meaning "womb", "source", "origin", or "vulva." The root is yu, to bind or restrain, but the word's primary usage across all Sanskrit literature is anatomical and generative. It appears in the Rigveda in the sense of source or origin, and enters tantric liturgical usage in texts such as the Yoni Tantra and the Shakta Tantras.
