Microcosmic Orbit
Definition
The Microcosmic Orbit is a foundational Daoist meditation and energy practice in which awareness (and, in the traditional model, qi) is circulated in a continuous loop along two main channels of the subtle body: upward along the spine (the Du Mai or Governing Vessel) and downward along the front of the body (the Ren Mai or Conception Vessel). The loop typically begins at the perineum, rises through the spine to the crown, then descends through the face, throat, and chest back to the lower abdomen and perineum.
The practice integrates breath, somatic attention, and in more advanced versions, specific visualisation. It is taught in the Daoist inner alchemy tradition as a foundational stage of cultivation — a way of establishing the basic circulation of qi before more complex practices are introduced.
Where the word comes from
The term "Microcosmic Orbit" is a modern Western translation, popularised largely through the work of Mantak Chia from the 1970s onward. The underlying practice — circulating qi along the Du and Ren channels — is described in classical Daoist texts including those of the neidan (inner alchemy) tradition, particularly from the Song dynasty (960–1279 CE). The classical Chinese term is xiǎo zhōutiān (小周天) — "small heavenly circuit" or "small celestial cycle."
In Tantra Clinic practice
The Microcosmic Orbit is taught in The 30-Day Erection Reset as a central practice for moving arousal energy away from the genitals and distributing it through the whole body — which reduces the build-to-discharge pattern that underlies premature ejaculation and the anxiety-ED cycle. We teach it in three stages: establishing awareness at the two poles (perineum and crown), then learning to draw sensation up the spine on the inhale, then completing the front-channel descent on the exhale. The physiological effects — reduced pelvic tension, improved arousal regulation, calmer nervous system — are reliable regardless of what model explains them.
